Effective Mole Cricket Treatment in Greater New Orleans and the Northshore

Of all the troublesome pests South Louisiana homeowners encounter, the mole cricket might be the most destructive of all. These strange insects are related to the regular crickets that we're used to hearing on summer nights, but they spend most of their lives below the soil surface like moles. Unfortunately, their burrowing habits wreak havoc on lawns and gardens. As they use their large, clawed front legs to tunnel, they damage plant roots and disrupt the soil, destroying the turf around them as they go.

Mole crickets can be a real headache for homeowners, but you're not alone in the fight to effectively combat them. At Lobb-Alexis, we've spent the last 40 years perfecting the art of lawn care, including powerful mole cricket control services. The longer an infestation is allowed to continue, the harder it is to terminate. Take action today to stop the cycle and restore vitality to your lawn!

Telltale Signs of a Mole Cricket Infestation

Mole cricket activity ramps up significantly in spring and early summer when mating season begins. That said, here in the Deep South, it's not uncommon to experience two generations per year, doubling the potential for destruction. Timing is of the essence when it comes to lawn pest management, so call our team right away if you notice any of the following signs:

  • Mounds of loose soil: Mole crickets push up the soil as they tunnel underground. These mounds can be small and scattered or form raised ridges along their pathways.
  • Spongy lawn: Tunneling can detach the turfgrass from the underlying soil, creating a spongy feeling when you walk on affected areas.
  • Dead or dying grass: As mole crickets damage roots and disrupt the soil, patches of grass will eventually turn brown and die.
  • Presence of predators: Birds, raccoons, and other animals that prey on mole crickets may dig up areas of your lawn in search of them.

How to Get Rid of Mole Crickets

Trust the Professionals at Lobb-Alexis for Total Control

The key to controlling mole cricket populations is understanding their life cycle. These pests are at their most destructive in their nymph stage. With each successive stage, they become more resilient and harder to control. By the time mole cricket adults emerge, the damage can be extensive.

Our experts know when peak mating and egg-laying season begins, so we can target treatments to kill mole crickets before a new batch of eggs hatches. We can also target adult mole cricket infestations with industry - leading insecticides tailor-made for these stubborn and destructive pests.

Questions About Mole Crickets? We've Got Answers.

When it comes to Greater New Orleans and the Northshore's most troublesome pests, Lobb-Alexis is the team to turn to for answers. We've answered some of the top questions we receive about mole crickets below. Looking for more information? Call us directly at (504) 471-0044!

What are mole crickets?

Mole crickets are insects that frequently burrow through lawns and gardens, damaging plants in the process. We have three species of mole crickets in South Louisiana:

  • Northern mole crickets (Neocurtilla hexadactyla)
  • Tawny mole crickets (Scapteriscus vicinus)
  • Southern mole crickets (Scapteriscus borellii)

The northern and tawny mole cricket species are responsible for the most damage and require targeted treatments to control. Call Lobb-Alexis if you're concerned about lawn pests in your yard!

Are mole crickets dangerous?

Mole crickets aren't dangerous to humans or pets in the traditional sense, as they don't bite or sting, are not poisonous, and don't carry diseases. However, two invasive species - northern and tawny mole crickets - are a menace to lawns, responsible for many swathes of patchy, dead grass and struggling gardens. If your lawn's health and appearance are important to you, call Lobb-Alexis for superior mole cricket control!

What do mole crickets eat?

Mole crickets are actually omnivores, meaning they have a varied diet that includes both plant and animal material. However, they're particularly fond of feeding on the roots and tender shoots of warm-season grasses, which is part of the reason they can be such destructive lawn pests. You may be particularly susceptible to mole crickets if you have Bermuda grass, bahiagrass, St. Augustine grass, or zoysia grass.
